Land Acknowledgment
As you may already be aware, what we call ‘Ottawa’ is built on unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe territory; Dr. Lynn Gehl, an Algonquin Anishinaabe-kwe author, advocate, artist, and public speaker, writes beautifully about the history of this land here.
By basing our practice in Ottawa, we recognize that we are operating on stolen land. We are committed, both personally and professionally, to decolonization and the honouring of Indigenous peoples’ stewardship of this land from time immemorial. Please feel free to ask us how; we are happy to provide (and learn about!) resources for furthering knowledge, compassion, and respect.
If you haven’t already, a good place to start is learning about whose land you live on, and Native-Land.ca is a fantastic resource for this. Of course, exploring the Truth and Reconciliation Commission website, and specifically spending time working through the reports, is integral to learning about the historic AND current violence inflicted on Indigenous peoples and nations. Additionally, the University of Alberta has a wonderful course called Indigenous Canada, and you can read more about that here.
